This Broga Hill hiking guide covers everything you need to know before your first sunrise climb, from trail options and entrance fees to the exact time to leave the car park in the dark.
It is still dark when you reach the trailhead. The gravel road is quiet except for the sound of other hikers ahead of you, their torchlight bobbing through the lalang grass. By the time you reach the second peak, the horizon has turned from black to deep violet.
Twenty minutes later, the sun breaks over the hills and the entire valley below fills with what regulars call the Carpet of Clouds, a sea of mist that hangs over Semenyih town and the surrounding palm oil plantations until the heat of the morning burns it away. For a hill that takes less than an hour to climb, Broga delivers disproportionately.
This Broga Hill hiking guide breaks down the climb so you know exactly what to expect.

History of Bukit Broga
Broga Hill, or Bukit Broga, is located in Semenyih, Selangor, roughly 40 kilometres south of Kuala Lumpur. The hill rises to 400 metres above sea level and is one of the most popular weekend hikes in the Klang Valley, particularly among families, beginner hikers, and anyone chasing a sunrise without a four-hour drive.
The name Broga is believed to derive from “Buragas,” an ancient mythical creature said to have once dwelt in the surrounding forest. The hill is also called Bukit Lalang, after the cogon grass that covers the exposed upper slopes following a forest fire years ago.

What to Expect at Broga Hill
The Trail
The Bukit Broga trail leads to three consecutive peaks. Peak 1 offers the first panoramic views and is where most casual hikers stop for sunrise photographs.
Peak 2 sits slightly higher and gives a wider angle over the valley. Peak 3 is the most challenging of the three, involving a rock-climbing section with ropes, and leads to an extended trail towards Gunung Tok Wan (675m) and eventually Puncak 18 (809m) for those who want a longer day.

The trail is unshaded from the first peak onwards. The lalang grass that covers the upper slopes gives Broga its distinctive appearance but provides no shelter from the sun. Hike before 9am or you will bake.
Make the morning scramble a breeze by following the tips in this Broga Hill hiking guide.

Difficulty Level
Moderate for beginners, easy for regular hikers. The lower section of the trail through the plantation is gradual and wide.
The approach to Peak 1 involves a short steep section with ropes. The path to Peak 2 is less steep. Peak 3 requires some scrambling. The trail can be slippery after rain, particularly on the grass-covered slopes and rocky sections. Wear proper hiking shoes, not slippers.
Hiking Time and Distance
- Total distance: Approximately 3.7 kilometres (AllTrails verified)
- Distance to Peak 2: Approximately 1 kilometre from the trailhead
- Elevation: 400 metres
- Time to summit: 30 to 45 minutes for fit hikers, up to 1.5 hours for beginners
- Return: Allow the same time back down
Two Trail Options: Free vs Paid
Since March 2022, there are two ways to access Broga Hill.
Option 1: MPKJ Free Trail (New)
The Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) opened a free public trail and free parking area in March 2022, located approximately 500 metres from the main road.
The trail is clearly marked with steel poles, ropes as safety features, directional signs, and information boards. This is the recommended option if you want to avoid fees. The trail is still developing in sections and can be muddy in wet weather.
Option 2: Private Land Trail (Original)
The original trail passes through private land (a palm oil estate). An attendant at the gate collects an entrance fee of RM5 per person. Parking within the estate costs RM5.
This route is wider and slightly easier, making it a better option for families with young children or beginners who want a more straightforward path.

Do You Need a Hiking Permit?
Yes. Broga Hill sits within the Bukit Sungai Putih Forest Reserve, and hikers are officially required to obtain a permit from the Selangor Forestry Department before entering the forest area.
The permit can be applied for online at forestry.selangor.gov.my. There have been reports of hikers being fined for not having one. Apply before your visit.
Best Time to Visit
For Sunrise
Sunrise at Broga Hill occurs at approximately 7am. Start your hike by 5.30am to 6am to reach the summit before the light breaks. If you are taking the free MPKJ trail and are unfamiliar with the route, arriving slightly earlier gives you time to navigate in the dark with a torch.
For Avoiding Crowds
Weekdays are significantly quieter than weekends and public holidays. On weekends, the trail can be extremely crowded from 6am onwards. If you must go on a weekend, arrive before 5.30am.
Weather
Avoid hiking after heavy rain. The slopes become slippery and the trail muddy, particularly on the approach to Peak 1 and the rocky section near Peak 3. Check the weather forecast the night before and reschedule if rain is expected.

What to Bring
A torch or headlamp (essential for pre-dawn starts), at least 1 litre of water per person, sunscreen, a hat, insect repellent, and proper hiking shoes. A light windbreaker is useful at the summit in the early morning. Do not bring glass bottles. Pack out everything you bring in.
Broga Hill Entrance Fees
- Free MPKJ trail: No entrance fee, free parking (approximately 500m from main road)
- Private land trail: RM5 entrance fee per person, RM5 parking within the estate
- Forestry permit: Required via forestry.selangor.gov.my (free)

Beginner Hiking Tips
- Start slow. Pick a pace you can sustain and stick to it. The first steep section near Peak 1 is where most beginners burn out by going too fast at the start.
- Use the ropes. They are there for a reason. On steep or slippery sections, hold the rope with both hands and take short steps.
- Wear the right shoes. Hiking shoes with grip are strongly recommended. Slippers are technically manageable on dry days but dangerous after rain.
- Bring more water than you think you need. The unshaded upper slopes are brutally hot once the sun is up. 1.5 litres per person is the minimum for a comfortable hike.
- Do not hike alone for the first time. Go with at least one other person, particularly if you are unfamiliar with the trail.
