We checked into lyf Chinatown Singapore expecting a co-living hotel with a nice lobby and a rooftop pool. What we got was a stay inside conserved pre-war shophouses on Pagoda Street, where the first shophouses were built as early as 1843, run by a team so warm we extended our time just to be around them longer.
It is one of the newest hotels in Chinatown, but the building it occupies is one of the oldest on the street. That contrast between old bones and new energy is what makes it different from everything else in the neighbourhood, and the reason we would book again without thinking twice.

The brand launched in 2016 and opened its first Singapore property in 2019. lyf Chinatown Singapore is the fifth lyf property in Singapore by The Ascott Limited, a 90-key hotel on Mosque Street that opened on 3 July 2026.
lyf Chinatown Singapore is at 25 Mosque Street, in the heart of one of Singapore’s most historically layered neighbourhoods. The property spans a row of conserved pre-war shophouses on Pagoda Street alongside a new-build wing, blending heritage architecture with contemporary interiors.
The design draws from the convergence of Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Eurasian cultures that defines Chinatown, with commissioned artworks inspired by the journeys of the early Chulia traders who shaped this precinct.

Pre-War Heritage from 1843
This was our favourite part of the stay, and the thing we did not expect to care about as much as we did. Part of the hotel occupies conserved pre-war shophouses on Pagoda Street, where the first shophouses-cum-residences were built in 1843 when land titles were first issued.
Most of the original architectural form has been preserved. You run your hand along a corridor wall and the plaster is original. The timber beams overhead are not reproductions.
The proportions of the rooms, the ceiling heights, the narrow shophouse depth with light coming in from the back courtyard, all of it is old Singapore, still standing, and they built a hotel inside it without pulling it apart.
The criss-cross motif at the entrance is drawn from heritage architectural details. The check-in counter is inspired by traditional Chinese medicine cabinets. The commissioned artworks on the walls trace the journeys of early Chulia traders who settled in this precinct.
This is not a hotel that demolished everything and started fresh. It kept the bones of the neighbourhood and worked around them.
That makes the stay not just comfortable but educational, and it gives you a connection to Chinatown that no glass-tower hotel in the Marina Bay area can replicate.

Once you are inside the hotel, you keep discovering new corners and spaces you did not know were there. The outdoor courtyards were a highlight we did not anticipate.
Each one has its own theme, with natural sunlight pouring in and greenery that breaks up the urban density of Chinatown around you. They give you breathing space, literally, and they are maintained with a level of care that shows.

Social Spaces That Work for Introverts
This is personal, and it matters. We are introverts. The idea of a “social living” hotel initially sounded like our worst nightmare.

No Bottled Water, No Slippers, No Waste
lyf Chinatown Singapore takes a clear position on waste reduction, and it is one of the things we respected most about the stay.
There are no plastic water bottles in the rooms. No complimentary tea bags or coffee sachets. No slippers. No single-use toiletries. If you are used to full-service hotels, this will catch you off guard on the first night.
But the trade-off is smarter than it looks. Water dispensers are placed just outside the rooms on every floor, so you can refill a reusable bottle in seconds without walking far. Pantries with induction hobs, utensils, and communal fridges are a short walk from your door, so you can cook, prep a meal, or store groceries for a longer stay.
WASH & HANG, the communal laundry space, is available on site and designed as a playful reinterpretation of the neighbourhood’s architectural character. For longer stays, it removes the need to pay for external laundry services entirely.

If we came back to lyf Chinatown Singapore tomorrow, the team would be the reason. Every single interaction during our stay felt personal and attentive, from check-in to the heritage walk to the evening events.
This was not hospitality by the book. It was hospitality from people who are proud of the neighbourhood they work in and want you to fall for it the way they have.
The team is led by what lyf calls the Ambassador of Buzz, who runs a 1.5-hour heritage walking tour through Chinatown’s hidden alleys, shophouses, temples, and traditional trades. The tour alone is worth the stay.

Beyond the walk, the team runs rotating cultural activities including Chinese calligraphy, henna art, Muslim-friendly perfume workshops, and local food experiences. We have stayed at hotels with better rooms. We have stayed at hotels with bigger pools. We have never stayed at a hotel where the staff made us want to extend.

The location is unbeatable, and it is the reason lyf Chinatown Singapore works as well as it does. Step outside and you are in the middle of one of Singapore’s most concentrated cultural districts.
Jamae Mosque is on the same street. Sri Mariamman Temple, the oldest Hindu temple in Singapore, is two minutes away. The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple is a short walk down South Bridge Road.
Ann Siang Hill and Club Street have some of the best cocktail bars in the city. Maxwell Food Centre and Chinatown Complex, Singapore’s largest hawker centre with over 260 stalls, are both within walking distance. Chinatown MRT is minutes away on foot, and from there the entire island opens up.
We thought we knew Singapore. This neighbourhood proved us wrong. Every turn gave us something new: a mural we had never seen, a kopitiam we had never heard of, a temple entrance we had walked past three times without noticing.
lyf puts you right at the centre of all of it, and the hotel’s position on Mosque Street means you are not visiting Chinatown. You are in it.
Restaurants and Attractions Near lyf Chinatown
Chinatown is one of the most concentrated food districts in Singapore, and lyf’s position on Mosque Street puts you within walking distance of hawker centres, heritage kopitiams, cocktail bars, and some of the best Nyonya food in the country. We did not need to travel more than ten minutes on foot for any meal during our stay.
Our hosted dinner was at Straits Chinese Nonya Restaurant on Craig Road, the oldest Peranakan restaurant in Singapore since 1953.
The restaurant has been featured in the Michelin Guide Singapore for eight consecutive years and serves Peranakan dishes made from secret recipes handed down through generations.
The dishes here reminded us why Peranakan cuisine deserves more international recognition than it gets. The spice pastes are made from scratch, the dishes carry layers of flavour that unfold slowly, and the portions are generous enough to share across a table.
For anyone staying at lyf Chinatown Singapore, Straits Chinese is walkable and worth every dollar.
Beyond the restaurant, Chinatown could keep you fed for a week without repeating a meal. Maxwell Food Centre, Chinatown Complex, and the Smith Street food strip are all within minutes.
Kopi, kaya toast, bak kut teh, popiah, and char kway teow are available before 8am if you are willing to queue. And if Nyonya food is what you are after, this neighbourhood has some of the best in the country.
