Equine Resort Yan: Discover Horse Riding in Kedah, Malaysia

Gunung Jerai rises to 1,217 metres along the border of Yan and Kuala Muda, and the mist sits low across its slopes on clear mornings while the rest of Kedah carries on below. Yan is the smallest municipality in the state, a coastal district along the Straits of Malacca flanked by paddy fields, forested hillsides and quiet beaches that most visitors to the region never bother to seek out.

At the base of that mountain, inside Kampung Raga, sits one of the most undervisited attractions in northern Malaysia: Equine Resort Yan.

Background of Equine Resort Yan

Equine Resort Yan is a working horse farm with qualified instructors, structured riding packages, a mix of animals on site and three homestays run by local villagers. The mountain fills the skyline behind the paddock.

I visited this farm with Tourism Malaysia and came away with a clear view of why this place deserves more attention than it currently gets. For families, first-time riders and anyone looking for something genuinely different from the usual day trip options in Kedah, this is the one to prioritise.

How to Get to Equine Resort Yan

Mount Jerai is well known across Kedah for its cool climate, elevated views and long history as a retreat destination. Seeing it from inside the resort grounds, with horses moving in the paddock and the mountain sitting directly behind them, is a different experience from viewing it at a distance off the highway.

The farm sits low enough at the mountain’s base that the scale of Jerai is fully visible above the treeline, and the combination of the animals, the open land and the mountain backdrop makes for a setting that is hard to replicate elsewhere in the state.

The road into Kampung Raga passes through some of the most quietly scenic terrain in Yan. Paddy fields stretch out on both sides for much of the route, with occasional glimpses of the coast to the west and the mountain ahead. There is no dramatic arrival moment but the cumulative effect of the landscape on the drive in sets the visit up well before you even reach the gates.

From Kuala Lumpur and Kedah

Yan sits approximately 40 kilometres from Sungai Petani and 45 kilometres from Alor Setar, the state capital of Kedah.

From Kuala Lumpur, allow four and a half hours via the E1 North-South Expressway. The drive in passes through open countryside, rice paddies and small villages, and the transition from highway to rural Kedah is gradual enough that by the time you reach Kampung Raga the pace has already shifted considerably.

Horse Riding in Kedah: What to Expect at Equine Resort Yan

The horses at Equine Resort Yan are well-handled and visibly at ease with visitors, which matters more than it sounds at a place that runs a high volume of first-time riders. Hay is available for purchase at the farm to feed them before your ride. It is a simple activity that takes no organisation and lands well with younger visitors in particular. The horses respond to being fed with the kind of patience that makes the whole interaction easy for children who have never been near a horse before.

Qualified instructors are present and active throughout every session. The approach is calibrated to whoever is in front of them on the day: first-timers are given time to get comfortable in the saddle before the ride picks up pace, while more experienced riders are given room to ride with some independence rather than being walked slowly around an enclosure. The quality of instruction here is what separates a visit to Equine Resort Yan from the average pony ride experience. There is actual teaching happening, and it shows in how quickly even complete beginners find their footing.

The horses are a mix of breeds, with more than ten horses housed in the stables at any given time. The stud farm element of the operation means that breeding is taken seriously here alongside the riding school, and the overall standard of the animals reflects that. These are not tired, overworked tourist horses. They are well-conditioned, well-fed and looked after with obvious care.

Horse Riding Prices and Packages

Equine Resort Yan structures its riding across three clear formats, each suited to a different type of visitor. There is no single package that applies to everyone, which is the right approach for a farm that receives families with young children alongside adults who want a proper riding experience.

Joy rides are the starting point and the right option for children or anyone who has never ridden before. A single round costs RM5, two rounds RM7 and three rounds RM10. The pricing is accessible enough that there is no reason to limit yourself to one round. Taking three rounds gives enough time to actually settle into the riding rather than just getting on and getting off.

Trail rides are where the surrounding landscape earns its place in the visit. At RM90 per hour covering 20 kilometres of terrain around the foot of Mount Jerai, these rides take visitors through rural Kedah countryside that cannot be accessed by car. The route passes through open land, along forest edges and across terrain with mountain views that hold throughout the ride. For visitors who are comfortable in the saddle and want to cover ground, this is the package to book.

The basic training package is structured for those who want to learn to ride properly. Ten instructor-led lessons come in at RM500, progressive in structure and designed to build from the ground up. It is the right option for anyone within driving distance of Yan, spending multiple days in the area or simply committed to getting past the beginner stage. Ten lessons at that price point is a reasonable investment for the level of instruction on offer.

Animals and Family Activities

Equine Resort Yan is also home to ostriches and deer alongside its horses. Feeding the animals is a straightforward and enjoyable activity that extends the visit naturally for families with younger children. The grounds are open enough that children can move between the animal enclosures at a relaxed pace, and the variety of animals keeps the experience from being one-dimensional for visitors who are not primarily there for the riding.

The ostriches in particular tend to hold attention longer than expected. They are curious and interactive when fed, and the experience of feeding an ostrich up close is the kind of thing that younger visitors remember. The deer enclosure is quieter and works well as a counterpoint to the energy of the horse riding earlier in the visit.

As a half-day itinerary, the combination of horse riding, horse feeding and animal interactions across the farm covers enough ground to keep all ages occupied without feeling stretched.

Where to Stay Near Equine Resort Yan: Kampung Raga Homestay

Three homestays run by local villagers are available on-site for visitors who want to extend the trip. Staying overnight in Kampung Raga shifts the entire nature of the visit. The farm at dawn, before other visitors arrive and before the midday heat sets in, runs at a noticeably different pace from the afternoon. The mist from Mount Jerai is still sitting across the upper slopes, the horses are being fed and watered, and the village around the farm is only beginning to move.

The homestays are run by local families and give visitors access to the village at a pace that a day trip cannot replicate. Kampung Raga has a long history as one of Kedah’s established homestay destinations, with the programme tracing back to 1996.

The village sits at the foot of Gunung Jerai between Kampung Permatang Keramat and Kampung Jawa, surrounded by paddy fields and with beaches within easy reach along the coast. For those with more time in the area, the surrounding district of Yan also has several waterfalls accessible from the village, including Titi Hayun and Seri Perigi, as well as stretches of quiet coastline along the Straits of Malacca that see very little tourist traffic.

Combining a visit to Equine Resort Yan with a night or two at the Kampung Raga homestay makes for a well-rounded Kedah itinerary that goes considerably beyond the usual northern Malaysia circuit of Langkawi and Alor Setar. Yan rewards the extra night.
