Hiking Gunung Datuk, Negeri Sembilan

History

Gunung Datuk is one of the most important historical sites in Negeri Sembilan. Located about 20km from Rembau town, Gunung Datuk was once home to an ancient Malay kingdom known as Kedah Tua or Old Kedah. The name 'Gunung Datuk' literally translates as 'mountain king' and it refers to a hilltop where there are many caves carved into its sides. These caves were used as shelters by hunters and fishermen who lived there thousands of years ago. Gunung Datuk has been declared a national park since 1992 by the Malaysian government because it contains many important archaeological artifacts such as pottery shards, stone tools and human remains dating back more than 10,000 years!

Gunung Datuk Trail Map

The distance of Gunung Datuk is approximately four and a half kilometres one way. The trail is well-defined except at the beginning which is relatively challenging, but you'll find that the climb after the first checkpoint is more bearable.  As you ascend, you will cross paths with loud howling monkeys swinging across treetops. Don’t be afraid to explore the dense jungle as the trails are marked with red and white or yellow tapes to guide you.

As time passes, the slope gets less steep and in no time, a cool breeze welcomes you which is a pleasant reprieve from the oppressive humidity. Soon, you will arrive at an open area located just beneath the summit which is also a camping site among hikers. You will immediately be wowed by the large towering rock formations which marks the successful end of your hike up. Use the steel ladders for assistance to get you to the very top of the Gunung Datuk boulders.

Once you’ve arrived at the summit, take your sweet time to rest and enjoy the breath-taking views. If you are fortunate enough to come on a clear day, you can even see as far as the Straits of Malacca.

At this point, you may feel exhausted from the strenuous climbing, but thankfully the way down is easier. Be sure to relax your muscles and recharge for as long as you wish before starting your journey back down!
