Restoran Nasi Kukus Sotong Besar

This restaurant is known for its signature deep-fried giant squid served with fluffy, steamed rice. This delicious combo comes with spicy sambal and a small bowl of gravy. Be prepared to wait as it usually gets crowded with office workers during weekdays and families on weekends.

The portion for each Sotong Besar is quite big that you can consider sharing it. The fresh, giant squid is coated with flour and deep fried until golden brown. In the evening, people enjoy having it as a snack with a chili dip. It is always fried perfectly each time to achieve a crunchy skin with a juicy burst of flavor inside.

On top of that, grilled mutton is also a hit here. It is served with a choice of luscious homemade black pepper or sweet soy sauce. The grilled chicken is equally as delicious as it is thoroughly marinated with a special herb mix. Both types of meats are served along with aromatic yellow rice and clear soup. Besides Nasi Kukus, this restaurant also offers traditional Nasi Kerabu and Nasi Lemak. There is an extensive drink selection that's refreshing and affordable, such as freshly squeezed juices.

Kedai Hafiz Char Kuey Teow Berkeley

The original Char Kuey Teow is believed to be a part of Penang’s heritage cuisine, yet you can find a very similar taste right here in a makeshift stall around the corner of the Berkeley roundabout. This humble place operates late in the evening, serving stall-style wok-fried Char Kuey Teow with cockles.

Each serving is delightfully loaded with cockles, shrimps, bean sprouts, and chives. Upgraded version is the 'special' Char Kuey Teow - which comes with extra rice noodles and shrimps. On the table, you will find a jar of pickled green chilies for extra tang. If you fancy something spicier, ask for ‘cili potong’ or tiny slices of birds’ eye chilies soaked in light soy sauce.

Another popular dish here is Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng Berempah. Nasi Lemak is a national dish featuring fragrant rice cooked in coconut milk. It is served with a sweet and spicy sambal and various garnishes like fried anchovies and peanuts, hard-boiled egg, and fresh cucumber slices. Ayam Goreng Berempah is deep-fried chicken marinated in ginger paste and aromatic spices. It is one of the many side dishes that you can pick to go along with the Nasi Lemak. Other popular choices are squid curry, cockles sambal, beef lungs, or quail eggs.

Those looking to quench their thirst can also drop by the stall for a refreshing young coconut. It is cut open upon order and served with (or without) ice.

This signature rojak comes with chunky pieces of deep-fried kuih fritters and tofu, boiled diced potatoes, hard-boiled egg, cucumbers, sweet turnip, and lettuce leaves. You can request for boiled cuttlefish to be added as well. The rojak is served with Gani’s thick peanut sauce - a family recipe that has been passed down for decades to three generations. Gani only uses ground peanuts of the finest grade in making its authentic sauce.

Delicious when eaten with Rojak Klang is Cendol – a popular shaved ice dessert topped with green pandan jelly, canned sweet red beans, creamy coconut milk, and sweet palm sugar syrup.

On top of that, this restaurant also serves heavier dishes such as Nasi Beryani Kambing Sonata and Nasi Beryani Ayam Sonata. Nasi Beryani comprises of Basmathi rice cooked with aromatic Beryani spices and meat. It is usually served with dhal curry, pickles and papadom crackers. Nasi Beryani has a unique, buttery texture of ghee and possesses a vibrant yellow colour from the saffron.

Warong Wak Shariff

At Warong Wak Shariff, you can find the  legendary Mee Jawa Klang which was invented at this very location in 1972. This dish is believed to be a creation of the Jawa-oriented Malays, hence the name ‘Mee Jawa’. A bowl of Mee Jawa consists of yellow noodles and a variety of garnishes including golden kuih fritters and tofu, hard-boiled egg, slices of beef, fresh chives, bean sprouts and fried shallots. It is drenched in a heavy and thick sweet potato broth. Slices of red chilies and a small calamansi are the usual toppings as to enhance the taste of the broth.

What sets Wak Shariff’s Mee Jawa apart from the rest is the way the dish is diligently prepared according to the original recipe. The owner still slices the hard-boiled egg using the old-school hinged egg slicer to get even slices every time. Mee Jawa carries a complex yet balanced taste of sweet and savoury, making it a noodle dish that can be enjoyed at any time of the day!
